LESBIAN GAY BISEXUAL MARCH & FESTIVAL

Leather's diversity is part

of Pride, too

by Tim Newborn-Hilyard

Leather, sadomasochism, bondage, discipline. These are words that frighten some, intrigue others. For some, these words define a large part of their sexuality and overall identity.

One of the greatest myths held by the "vanilla" community about leather-sex is that the slave is coerced or even forced to participate. The leather/fetish community has adopted and adheres to the rule of “safe, sane and consensual." At no time is anything done which both parties have not discussed, agreed to and are entirely comfortable with.

The psychology of leather varies with the individual, but all who participate would likely agree that something primal is met which is not satisfied during ordinary encounters. The slave relinquishes cóntrol and

responsibility to the master. Ropes free us as surely as they bind. This and more is exhibited to the world in "the wearing of the skins."

There are those in the lesbian-gay community who consider leatherfolk a hindrance to the movement. But it is our community also, and we have made many contributions in money, time and energy. It is vitally important, and becoming more crucial each day, that we acknowledge and celebrate the diversity of our world. Each facet has added its own flavor to the gay community and none should be told to hide in the shadows for the sake of appearing straight and "normal" with promises of equality within the ranks at a more convenient time.

For this reason, I exhort the leathermen and leatherwomen of Ohio to come out on Pride Day '94 and take our rightful place in the sun, not the shadows.

Pride 1994 isn't anything to sleep through

Wake Up Cleveland!

That is the theme for the 1994 LesbianGay-Bisexual-Transgender Pride March. Let's make enough noise this year to let the city know that we are proud of who we are. Get your group, business, family and friends and dig out those whistles, bells, drums and kazoos for the loudest celebration of Gay Pride that Cleveland has ever seen. Join us June 11 for our annual Pride March.

We've been encouraging all groups to enter a float in the March. So far we have more than a dozen floats and vehicles (our

permit allows up to 20). These spaces will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Let us know if you'll be showing up with a float (228-0683), otherwise there may be no space for you.

We also suggest to individuals who are not completely "out," (and to those who just enjoy dressing up), to wear a costume. Prizes will be awarded for Best Float and Best Costume.

Since it was such a success last year, we are again asking for a free-will offering at the "toll booth" at the entrance to the Pride Festival. It costs a lot to produce Pride, so we encourage everyone to donate as much as possible.

We will assemble June 11 in the Trinity Cathedral parking lot on East 22nd Street, between Euclid and Prospect Avenues, at 11 am. The pre-March Rally will begin at 11:15 and step-off will be at 12 noon sharp.

In addition to the escort from the Cleveland Police Motorcycle Unit and Pride's Volunteer Security Force, each group will be expected to assign peacekeepers as an added security measure. We suggest two peacekeepers for every ten marchers. These volunteers will be responsible for keeping their group's marchers to the westbound half of the street during the March, aiding anyone in their group experiencing difficulty in completing the March, and reporting any problems or unusual situations to the group leaders or heads of security.

Let's get noisy and... Wake Up Cleveland!
